Flax & Borage

We’ve long known that the "good" fats found in flaxseed and borage have powerful health benefits. The seeds of the borage plant are the richest known source of Gamma Linoleic Acids (GLAs), which are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and PMS, and flaxseed is extremely high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which studies have shown can ease symptoms of depression and boost brain function.

A Natural Way To Treat Dry Skin

We’ve long known that the "good" fats found in flaxseed and borage have powerful health benefits. The seeds of the borage plant are the richest known source of Gamma Linoleic Acids (GLAs), which are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and PMS, and flaxseed is extremely high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which studies have shown can ease symptoms of depression and boost brain function.

We’re now learning that these two natural substances have beauty benefits as well! Last year, researchers from the Institute of Experimental Dermatology in Germany showed that flaxseed and borage oil supplements can make improve the look and feel of dry skin.

BorageThree groups of women with dry skin were studied. The first group took flaxseed supplements, the second took borage oil supplements, and the third was given a placebo. The dose was 2.2 grams per day.

Researchers found that after 12 weeks, the women who’d taken borage oil showed a 35 percent reduction in skin inflammation, while those who took flax showed a 45 percent reduction. Both groups also experienced a significant increase in skin hydration and a reduction in roughness and scaling. None of these changes were observed in the placebo group, though the skin of those subjects did become a bit smoother (but still not as smooth as the flax and borage groups).

This is great news for those of us who need a little moisture. If you have dry skin or suffer from an inflammatory condition like eczema or rosacea, borage and flaxseed supplements might help–just make sure you use a quality brand like Nature Made or GNC. Flaxseed and borage oil also have topical benefits and can be found in a growing number of products. Here are a few to try:
