Wrinkles :: BOTOX® :: Benefits |
| |
|
BOTOX, botulinum toxin type A, was the first botulinum toxin available for the treatment of facial wrinkles and excessive sweating. It has been used for facial wrinkles since 1981, therefore we have over 20 years of data including side effects and long term outcomes with this product. This experience tells us that BOTOX® is a quick and safe method to improve facial wrinkling.

There are no long term side effects associated with its use. In fact, long term use of BOTOX may prevent or decrease wrinkle formation by weakening the muscles that cause the wrinkles in the first place. The use of BOTOX for facial wrinkles and excessive sweating has been well studied. In fact, studies have been submitted to the FDA for approval for the treatment of facial wrinkles. We believe that BOTOX will be approved for the use in facial wrinkles in the US in early 2002. It has already been approved in Canada for facial wrinkles and excessive sweating. If approved, BOTOX will be the only form of botulinum toxin on the market that has been approved by the FDA for this purpose. It is currently available as an "off-label" use.
What to expect during your office visit?
It takes physicians approximately 10-15 minutes to inject BOTOX depending on the size of the area treated. No anesthetic is necessary, although some patients do prefer a topical numbing cream. Most patients notice little to no pain during treatment and describe the feeling as a slight stinging sensation that quickly subsides. Immediately after being injected, patients can resume normal activities with no down time. The effects of BOTOX are usually visible within just a few days and last approximately 3-4 months, sometimes longer. With BOTOX, patients can expect consistent wrinkle-smoothing results each time they get injected.
