All of these are suspensions of bovine dermal collagen. The only difference between Zyderm I and II is the concentration of collagen (35 mg/cc with Zyderm I and 65 mg/cc with Zyderm II). Zyplast is a somewhat more stable product because it contains collagen cross-linked with 0.0075% glutaraldehyde (35 mg glutaraldehyde cross-linked per cc of collagen), which strengthens the collagen fibers thereby rendering it more resistant to decomposition as a result of the action of host collagenases. All of these products contain lidocaine, which reduces the pain of the injection.
Zyderm:
Zyderm 1 implants are used to treat fine lines, shallow scars, and
thin-skinned areas. Zyderm 2 implants are indicated for moderate
lines, wrinkles, scars, and thicker-skinned areas. Both are administered
by an injection with a fine-gauge needle just beneath the surface of the
skin.
Zyplast:
A form of injectable collagen that is cross-linked with the chemical
glutaraldehyde to strengthen the collagen fibers. It is used to treat
pronounced scars, lines, and furrows, as well as to define the lip border.
